Salão de Areias Coloridas

Imagine gigantic rocks which form tunnels and caves, stones and sandstone with their ever changing forms and sand of different colours spread about the ground of each ‘room’. These are the Salões de Areias Coloridas. This coloured sand is where the name of this tourist point in the Chapada Diamantina comes from. The sand comes in a variety of colours: pink, white, red, green, yellow and purple.
It is located close to the natural pools of the Parque Municipal do Serrano in Lençóis, about 500m away and the visit to Salão de Areias Coloridas allows visitors to walk amongst it’s caves. The area has been used as a backdrop for the filming of many films, and traditionally the local artists of the Chapada Diamantina used the coloured sands to fill bottles to create beautiful souvenirs of the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina. These days it is forbidden to take sand away from the Salão de Areias Coloridas and the only things that tourists can take away from here are wonderful memories and some beautiful photos of the Chapada Diamantina.
The Salão de Areias Coloridas is another ideal place within the Parque Serrano that is perfect for the whole family.
